NCARES is a non-profit organization. We are involved in various campaigns and activities, including raising awareness about the growing issue of dog fighting, the link that exists between animal abuse and violence against humans, the importance of spay/neuter, why it is unacceptable to keep dogs chained, and the cruelty of puppy mills.
The involvement that will have the greatest impact, is the implementation of a Humane Education (specifically, a Character Education) program in NC elementary and middle schools. We are working with The Healing Species to bring their highly effective program, which was started in South Carolina, to our state. We attended the NC Safe Schools Conference in Research Triangle Park, NC where we presented this program to the NC Department of Public Instruction. All attendants were extremely excited about the changes a program like this could bring. We are constantly applying for grant money, and once we obtain enough funding to pay a full time instructor to enter the classroom and present the curriculum, this project will be underway in our state.
Character Education teaches children compassion and responsibility, which are learned, rather than violence and indifference. Children who have experienced abuse or neglect learn that instead of continuing this cycle, they can heal their hearts and spirits by doing caring things for others--people and animals. They also come to realize that companion animals, like themselves, are not lives that can be neglected or mistreated. These children are the adults of a less-violent tomorrow, who will learn how to properly care for their animals today in order to minimize the problems of abuse, neglect, and overpopulation that our country is currently facing.
See an overview of this program on our Compassion Education Program Page.
Dependent on donations, we also help low-income families pay for unaffordable veterinary care and low-cost spay/neuter of their pets, foster homeless animals until forever homes can be found, and arrange transport for rescued animals to their new homes & for shelter animals to rescues.
